There's something magical about New York City in July. The summer heat radiates off the concrete, but the energy of the city is undeniable. It was against this vibrant backdrop that we had the privilege of capturing Grant and Nelson's love story through the nostalgic lens of 35mm film photography.
A Friendship Turned Love Story
Grant has been "our sunshine" since college days. His warmth and kindness made him an instant safe space for us, and he even officiated our wedding in Iceland. Watching him fall in love with Nelson has been nothing short of a gift. Nelson's creative spirit and the way he looks at Grant with pure adoration is a testament to the depth of their connection.
A Spontaneous NYC Adventure
Our trip to Brooklyn was a spur-of-the-moment decision, sparked by the desire to visit our dear friends and catch a Broadway show. It was a perfect opportunity to document Grant and Nelson's love in their own element, especially since Nelson had recently moved in with Grant. Their shared apartment is a beautiful blend of both their styles, a visual representation of their harmonious relationship.
NYC Skyline as Witness
Armed with our trusty 35mm camera, we set out to capture the essence of Grant and Nelson's love against the backdrop of their beloved Brooklyn. We started on a rooftop in Brooklyn. Grant, who used to live in the building, managed to get us access. It wasn't planned, but it set the tone for a day of authentic moments.
The rooftop offered a unique perspective of the city. We had privacy there, away from the busy streets below. Grant and Nelson seemed at ease, perhaps because of the familiar setting. It was truly such a surreal feeling to be up there documenting their love. It felt like being on the set of a movie.
Capturing Brooklyn's Romance on Film
After leaving the rooftop, we strolled to a nearby park. The trees hanging over provided the most gorgeous shade and soft light. We stopped on park benches, found gorgeous pockets of light, and they even had gorgeous architectural columns for us to shoot against. The park's greenery contrasted beautifully with the urban brownstones, creating a uniquely New York atmosphere. As we walked, we captured stolen glances, genuine laughter, and tender moments that truly showcase the depth of their connection.
From Park to Bar
After the park, we made our way to a cozy bar that holds a special place in Grant and Nelson's hearts. This was where they spent many of their early dates, and revisiting it brought back a flood of cherished memories. The warm, intimate lighting of the bar created the perfect ambiance for some truly romantic shots.
As they reminisced about the early days of their relationship, we discreetly captured their expressions – the soft smiles, the knowing looks, the gentle touches. These images, grainy and imperfect as only film can be, somehow perfectly encapsulate the raw, unfiltered nature of their love.
